It was a lean strength for so great a responsibility, but away from the
"small despicable army" you/he/she was believed that you/he/she had falsely been called
from the Kaiser. The men were all the volunteers that had enlisted since seven
the service of years with the colours as against him the three year-old service of
the Germans and French;  and on an average of theirs you/they had seen far more
actual fight that the Germans that disdainfully dismissed this
experiments as colonial war. If in the science of tactics and
strategy the English were inferior to the German army, its ability in the draught
and individual steadiness is unequalled;  and under anything as
you condition equal British troops they were tried the best men. But
conditions were not never equal during the first two years of the war
owing to the German superiority in numbers and in artillery;  and there
it was a third cause of the inequality because of the military and different systems
of the two countries. Universal service trained Germany to select the
men of ablest--at least from the middle ones and superior classes--to official and
you command his/her armies. In England in front of the war only an infinitesimal
fraction of its young ability found its way in the army.
Independent he/she wants to say and social position rather than brains both the
common qualifications for an errand;  and what was to be said
for such so long system as to fight it was mainly a matter of physicist
the courage and individual command lost its validity when war became a
the matter of science and the mechanical ingenuity. The fact that four of the
six British army-commanders (Plumer, Byng, Rawlinson Cavan) in the
West at the end of the war is old Etonians, it testifies to more things
what a their military ability;  and it was an irony of characteristic that from

official in a war in which cavalry didn't play any part really.
