F. Colburn (Francis Colburn) Adams
Capitolo 77
To the closing of the war he abandoned again the sword, and it was
it sent to the Senate of United States, where he was made president of the
Committee on Military Business. Its taller ambition was to shine as
a man of state. He served after four years as Secretary of War,
and then he/she returned to the Senate, where the rebellion found him/it
raised to the presidency of the Committee of Military Business.
His/her education, his/her services in the army his/her position as Secretary
of War, and in the Senate, it trained him to become completely
informed with our army, with his/her customs his/her laws, his/her material,
his/her lacks, and, above all, his/her officers' character. He was,
better it informed perhaps with these things that some other man in,
the United States. Neither it was him deficient in the knowledge of the
character to conduct, public men to the north and West. What he had
it didn't study well however, it was the character and the patriotism of
the people of those sections of our country.
It was the mature fruit of this knowledge, then that the Mr. Davis
applied in every department of the government of rebel; and it was this
that did him/it of so incalculable value to the rebellion. We have
seen and equalized admired the power with which he handled the scarce one
resources of the South. And we have seen the wisdom that him
exposed by the very in the section of his/her generals before. With
rare exceptions, he put the correct man in the correct place. He knew
the importance to put soldiers in command, when the duty of soldiers
it would be finished. You/he/she would have been fortunate for us if we had had
similar wisdom and practiced. When the rebellion started, there was no man
in the South to have happened. It is not also
very to say that has been him faithful to his/her country and state
raised to the command of our armies when the war started, he is able
you/he/she has crushed out quickly the rebellion. With his/her taking of mind, and
his/her iron wish, he would have handled so the great resources of the
North and West that the rebellion would have been crushed in one year
