Indian Frontier Policy; an historical sketch

Sir John Miller Adye

Capitolo 8

God the proclamation of Auckland, the British army should be withdrawn from
Afghanistan. For the time being this it seemed to be the case. But in reality
it was not so, and our position became soon dangerous, then critical,
and finally desperate. In the first place, the long line of
communication was responsible to some duration to be interrupted, as already
mentioned; then, again, Shah's arrival Soojah had excited anybody
enthusiasm; and the a lot of fact that we was foreign in language,
religion and it races, made our presence hateful to his/her subjects. In
short, the new Ameer was, and it continued to be, a mere puppet sustained
in authority from British bayonets.

These conditions had been being apparent for the first day of its arrival, and
grown in intensity up to that the end. Shah that same Soojah has discovered soon
what its authority on its people was almost nominal; and even if him
rubbed to our presence continued in the country, he also felt that the
day of our departure would be the last of its kingdom, and that ours
withdrawal was under the circumstances impossible. But the situation was
complicated equally from our his/her own point of view. If, as originally
promised, the British troops were withdrawn, the failure of the
the consignment immediately would become apparent from the anarchy that it is able
achieves. On the other hand to hold back an army in the far-distant mountains
not only of Afghanistan would be a breakup of the faith, but, while behaving
enormous expense, would strip India of soldiers that you/they would be in demand
elsewhere.

After long consideration, it was definite to reduce the total one of ours
forces in the country, while holding back a taking for the present on Cabul,
Ghuznee and Candahar, together with the passages of the Kyber and Bolam.
In short, the British army was sprinkled around weakly in a region of
mountains, among a hostile people and with his/her long lines of
communication insufficiently protected. Both in a soldier and a political
point of view the position was one false and dangerous.
