advancing toward India in league with Persia toward south and the mission
of Burnes was in reality political, his/her object that is to incite the Ameer
to enter a friendly alliance.

Dost Mahomed was rather prepared to satisfy our sights, and he/she offered to give
on the complex some connection with the two called Powers. It, however,
soon it became apparent that our affairs were from anybody means identical;  his
great object, as we founded, while being to recover the district of Peshawur that
before you/he/she had been taken some years by Runjeet Singh, while us, on the
other hand, mainly courted its friendship in order that its country
it would try a barrier against the advance of Russia and Persia.

Evidently these respective sights were divergent and the problems
doubtful;  when suddenly a Russian Envoy (Vicovitch), also on a so defined
commercial mission, reached Cabul while offering the money of Ameer and
assistance against the Sikhs. This altered the aspect of business. Burnes
written to the general Governor to whom the Russian were evidently trying
outbid us. Still some hope remained, until instructions defined they arrived
from God Auckland that it declines to interpose with or to act against Runjeet
Singh, the rule of the Punjaub. The felt of Ameer that we have done great
required on him but it gave him nothing in return. It became then evident
what the mission of Burnes was a failure, and in April 1838 that he is returned
to India. It was our first effort directed to provide against a distant
and incorporeal danger, and it failed;  but unfortunately we didn't do
hands the heart lesson.

In the meantime the Shah of Persia, instigated from Russia you/he/she besieged
Herat, but after months of unfruitful effort, and in consequence of ours
troops that send to the Persian Gulf, the Shah withdrew for a long time his/her army.

Not only it was the hostile efforts of the Shah on Herat in 1838 what
it was a cause of the anxiety to the Indian Government;  but, as Kaye
