The reaction after the war naturally tilted the authorities in the double
countries to leave alone policy of frontier, to all the events for the time.
Our declared object for years had been to make strong Afghanistan,
friendly, and independent. The first ones had not certainly been
finished, and the other two were doubtful. Anchor, from patience,
conciliation and benefits, are probable that we hope during time that
the wounds that we had inflicted would gradually be recovered, and a more stable
condition achieves. For one short period it was this way;  but then the old bugbear
of Russian advance on the dark wastes of Central Asia again
supervened, and it practiced his/her harmful influence on our policy.

In 1881 and the following years, Russia, while completing her/it
conquests, and improving his/her communications in the south-western part of
Central Asia, had involved in hostility rather you prolong with the
Tekke-Turcomans, ending in their subjugation and in the occupation of
the long one, desolate strip of country that extends eastwards from the
