The House of Dust; a symphony

Conrad Potter Aiken

Capitolo 52

It is everybody that we know about those we call our friends. . . .
We feel a sudden music, sees a playing
Of orderly thoughts--and again it is entirely silence.
The music, we suppose, (as in us)
It follows there forever, behind doors dams,--
As continuous after our departure,
Then, we foretell, it played before we came. . .
What does he/she know about me or me of you? . . .
Small enough. . . .We put in disagreement these doors
Only for chosen movements of the music:
This passage, (so I think--still this is supposition)
It will arrange it is in an effort that he imagines,--
More diamond, nevertheless, that his; and while he is liking
He will be piqued. . . He looks at me puzzled
And he/she thinks (to judge from same--this is also supposition)

Fixed look to the party, transports our secrets,
It is laughters. . . .but this, for many accounts rarely it is.
And to a large extent us the vouchsafe our friends,
Our persons in love also, clear notes only so little
As we will hold them to us probable to admire:
'Praise me for this' we say, or 'gives back to this,'
Or 'wonder to my innocence.' . . .the whole time
Holding back what is very precious to us,--
Of the left depth of lust or fear or hate,
The dark note that gives his/her power to the rope;
Or a white beauty--if such we know--
Too much as fire to speak than without the shame.

Well, this being so, and us who know him/it being
