With a sick grace--for Socrates to divide with his/her money hated--he put
his/her hand in the pocket where he usually held his/her portfolio.
"Really, her Mrs. Smith", he was saying, "it seems to me you are always
lacking money--because, bless my soul!" and such expression of
the dismay and dismay swept on its face what his/her wife
hurriedly asked:
"What the matter is, the Mr. Smith?"
"Interest enough!" he gasped. "My portfolio has gone!"
"Gone!" played again his/her wife in alarm. "Where has you/he/she been able him to leave?"
The Mr. Smith pressed his/her hand to his/her head in painful reflection.
"How many money was it him, Socrates there?" asked to his/her wife.
"Between forty and fifty dollars!" groaned the Mr. Smith. "If I don't do
find him/it, Sophronia I am a ruined man!"
This was, clearly, an exaggeration, but it showed the prickly one of
the loser's regret.
"Cannot you/he/she think where you left him/it?"
Suddenly the face of the Mr. Smith illuminated on.
"I remember where I left him/it, now" he said; "I was above in the room
a hour since, and, while changing my coat, taken my portfolio, and
the staid one on the desk. I will go to right on and I will look for him/it."
"Face, Socrates."
The Mr. Smith limited on the staircase with the agility of a man of half
his/her years, and it opened the door of his/her room with good hope that Jim
