Essays and Tales

Joseph Addison

Capitolo 76

And from his/her cheeks the flies of rosy colour,
Then it turns him to her, who of his/her train female
You had trust in the most greater part, and so she talks to pain:
"H, 'past of tis! he swims first my sight,
Inexorable death, and asked for his/her right.
You bear my last words to Turnus; you fly with speed
And he/she offers him opportune to my position succeeds;
Rejects the Trojans, and the city raises:
Goodbye."
DRYDEN.

Turnus didn't die in so heroic a way, although our poet seems
you/he/she has had his/her eye on the discourse of Turnus in the last verse:

God Percy sees my fall.

- Vicisti, et victum to extend palmas
Videre of Ausonii.
VIRG., AEn. xii. 936.

The Latin heads have seen me implore my life.
DRYDEN.

Earl's Percy lamentation on its enemy is generous, beautiful, and
impassioned. I have to only warn the reader not to leave the
the simplicity of the style, what you/he/she can forgive well in so old a poet,
prejudice him against the greatness of the thought:

Life then going away, Earl Percy taken
The man died by the hand,
It is said, "Earl Douglas, for the life of thy
I had lost my earth.

"Or Christ! mine a lot of dribble of doth of heart
With pain for cause of thy;
For sure a more famous rider
Misadventure not taken never."

That beautiful line, while "Picking up the man died by the hand", it will put the
reader in mind of the behaviour of AEneas toward Lausus that him him
you/he/she had killed as he came to the liberation of his/her elderly father:

To true ut vultum vidit morientis et now,
Modis of Now miris of pallentia of Anchisiades;
Ingemuit, miserans graviter, dextramqne tetendit.
VIRG., AEn. x. 821.

The pious prince saw young died Lausus;
He was distressed, he cried, then it understood his/her hand and says,
"Unlucky and poor youth! what you praise you/they can be paid
To so great value?"
DRYDEN.

I will take another opportunity to consider the other parts of this
old song.
