Grand'ther Baldwin's Thanksgiving with Other Ballads and Poems

Horatio Alger

Capitolo 30

As our sails to the air free us the throwing.
The winds breathe of pleased auspice that puff us long,
The sky, unperturbed it smiles serene,
Hope stands to the bow, and waters sparkle bright
With sparkling of the silvery brightness.

It is thy they express, Alma Mater, so powerful person and dessert,
It still plays in our ears as of yore,
It is thy maternal suggestion that we feel, wisdom-load,
As we push our fragile barking from the beach.
Whence give you foam-provide of crest of the mountainous sea
As turns back our looks that we extend,
We see the dear face of our benign mother,
And it blesses again her and again.

There is a fountain of Fable which the magic power
The devastations of time that all could mend,
And it replaces the arched form and the tottering footstep,
  The wrinkles and silvery hair,
Locks give flowing and brown and the graces of youth,
  His/her elastic and light footstep,
You/he/she could mantle the cheek with his/her long-enfeebled flower
And ago the acute and bright dull eye.

'Tis only a fable--a beautiful dream,
But the fable, the dream will come true,
How children of thy, Alma Mater, assembles to-night
The joys of years given for renewing.
Our eyes will grow bright with their old accustomed to light,
Our untrammelled of the care spirits,
And Hope's Goddess, with his/her fresh shades of rainbow,
It will paint every perspective more equitable.

How dessert was the friendships that we have formed in salt of thy!
As strong it was the vine tendril that have limited
Our hearts to his/her/their mother which provident care
  Included his/her children around!
Now strong in our virility us he/she anchors we tenderly take care of her/it;
And if from adversity least it brought,
Our strength will sustain her/it, our arm they bear her/it on,
And it sustains her/it through weal and through the pain.
