Capitolo 23
With a lot of one characteristic sketch,
And signed, in hand of school-boy,
"Your loving Valentine."
The years have come and they have gone,--
You/he/she has flown, I don't know where, --
And the happy face of the school-boy
It is serious with the care of virility;
But the heart of the man still strikes
To the well-remembered name,
It is in the day of this Valentine of Street
Still its choice is the same one.
There was once--ah, well!
You don't think that me the repine
When me dreamed this happy day
It would smile on you as mine;
But I felt the call of my country;
I knew that its need was aching.
Thank goodness, no selfish thought
Holds back me from the war.
But when the dear old flag
It will be floating in his/her ancient pride,
When two will be done one,
Any more is contended they divide,--
I will place down my musket,
My martial attire discharges him,
And it turns my cheerful feet
Homeward and Valentine.
LAST WORDS.
"Dear Charles", a soldier breathed,
"Comrade of Or true and experimented,
Who in the heat of battle
Pressed from next to my side;
I feel that I am stricken,
My life is declining fast;
Me fains would have Him with me,
Dear Charles, cultivates the last.
"It seems so all of a sudden, Charles,
To think the sun of to-tomorrow
It will repute me lifeless,
And me not twenty-one!
Me the small dreamed this morning,
Twould brings my last country;
The ways of God are not as our ways,
And I won't complain me.
"There is one in house, dear Charles,
He/she will cry for me when dead,
Of who heart--it is a mother--
Scarce is comforted.
You will write and it will tell her Charles,,
With my dear love that me
Bravely fought as a soldier owes,
And it died as he should die.
"And you will tell her Charles,,
You don't have to be distressed too much,
Our country complains our young lives,
For her it has need of this way.
And where he is it is able hesitation,
Or it turns back ignobly,
When the voice of Duty cries 'In before,'
Is it lights of Honor the footstep?
"And there is another Charles,
(Its voice became lower),
