Capitolo 56

'Ah, yes; but the parish priest of Berkeley of St. Fredegond, not in virtue
of his/her theology--I never felt him it found some to speak of--but in
the virtue of his/her musical talents. He went to the Church, I suppose,
on purely aesthetical motives. A musical service and it he liked
seemed natural to him to take part in the one, in the moment in which he seemed natural
to an Italian mediaeval with artistic tendencies to paint Madonnas
and St. Sebastians. There is no anything more in coat of cleric his that
what, I imagine, Edie. He didn't think twice never probably about him on
theological motives.'

'Oh, but that is very wrong of him, Harry. I don't intend having
any particular theological beliefs, clearly; one is waited for that
today; but going to the Church without them.'

'Well, you see, Edie, you don't have to judge Berkeley in completely the same
way as You would judge the other people. In his/her mind, the aesthetical side
it is always taller; the logical side is comparatively in temporary suspension.
Questions of I believe, questions of philosophical belief, questions
of science doesn't interest at all him; he looks at everybody of them from
the point of view of the impression alone. That in which he sees the
Church is not a body of dogmas as the Tall Cleric neither a set
of opinions as the Low Cleric but a near stock company of
educated and cultivated gentlemen, debited with the duty to take care of
for a number of beautiful mediaeval architectural monuments,
and to bring on a set of great and impressive musical or oral
services. To him, a cathedral is a historical and magnificent inheritance;
a sermon is a kind of literary and clever exercise; and a hymn is
a vehicle of capital for emotional and very solemn music. That is everything; and
we cannot blame him/it really not to see these things as us we owe
see them.'

'Well, Harry, I don't know. I like they double immensely. Mr.
Very beautiful Berkeley but me it perhaps likes the Mr. The Breton the best
of the two.'
