Not that I for a moment mean to implicate that in my belief the middle one of
the last century or the twenty years anterior to the Civil War, it was a
kind of gilded age in our American annalses. On the contrary one, it was,,
as I remember him/it, a lot a phase of development opens to the criticism; and
what in many respects. It was raw, embarrassed and authoritarian;
provincial and formative, rather than it formed. Socially and materially
we was, it compared with the present era of motors and living room-cars in the,

the Northerner or the so defined Free States, as contrasted with States of
