of education more experts will produce in expectancy; and as a rule him
you/he/she is thinking that kind of education will produce in expectancy men able of
science that advances. Now to advance science, to discover new snails or
you invent new ethyl it combines, it is not and you/he/she cannot be the principal object of the
mass of humanity. What the thick lacks are only unspecialised
knowledge--some kind of knowledge that trains men to comfortably get and
praiseworthily and profitably through the life, to satisfy emergencies as them
rises, to know their way through the world, to use their faculties in everybody
circumstances to the better advantage. And for this purpose what is wanted
it is, not the methods but the results of science.
A science and one are rationally taught only to our schools to,
present. I intend the geography. And the example of the geography is so eminently
profit to illustrate the difference I am trying to point out, that me
it will risk him to think of him for a moment in to pass. It is good for us
all to know that the world is round, without its necessary being for
every one of us to follow in detail the reasoning tangled from that
that result has been arrived to. It is good for all of us to know the
position in New York and Rio and Calcutta on the map, without his/her being
necessary for us to understand, far less to work out for us the,
observations and the calculations that mended their latitude and longitude.
Knowledge of the map is in himself a good thing, although it is a lot a
different thing indeed from the technical knowledge that trains a man
to make a chart of an unknown region, or to explore and to observe him/it.
It is besides far, a form of knowledge generally more profit. A fair
knowledge with the incarnate results in the atlas, in the geographical dictionary,
in Baedeker, and in Bradshaw, it is in trip a lot of useful oftener for us
through the world that a special knowledge with the methods of
