INAUGURAL LECTURE

ON THE STUDY OF HISTORY

Delivered June 1895 to Cambridge,

Devil Students--I look today again to once in front of the middle one of
the century, when I was reading to Edinburgh and fervently
desiring to come to this University.  To the three universities I applied
for admission, and, as things then it was, I had refused from everybody.
Here, from the first one I vainly mended my hopes, and here, in
a happier hour, after five-and-forty years of theirs I am finally,
carried out.

 Before, I desire to speak to him of what I am reasonably able
you call the unity of Modern History as an easy approach to questions
necessary to be met him on the threshold from some one occupying this
puts from that my predecessor has done so formidable to me the
reflected shiny of his/her name.

You has often felt it said that Modern History is a subject to
what the beginning neither end can be assigned.  Nothing beginning,
because the dense web of the fortunes of man is plotted without a
gap;  because, in society as in kind, the structure is,
continuous, and we can uninterruptedly trace again things, up to that
we weakly perceive the Declaration of independence in the forests of
Germany.  Anybody end, because, on the same principle, history did,
and history to do they are scientifically inseparable and separately
meaningless.

"Politics", Lord said John Seeley, "it is vulgar when they is not
liberalized by history, and history is grown weak in the mere literature
when it loses sight of his/her politics relationship practices."
Each perceives the sense in which this is true.  For the
science of politics is the one science from which the is deposited
brook of history as gold wheats in the sand of a river;
and the knowledge of the past, the record of the truths revealed from
experiments, are very practical, as a tool of action
and a power of which it goes to the creation the future #1.  In France,
