thin. Portsmouth has the honor, I believe, to establish the first one
workhouse of the recorded poor man--although not in the connection with his/her poets, as
it would naturally be supposed. The building was completed and tenanted in
1716. A reads it was approved seven years later, in England that authorizes the
establishment of workhouses of the parish there. The first one and only custodian of
the Portsmouth almshouse above to 1750 a woman was--Rebecca Austin.

Speaking of first things, we am said from the Mr. Nathaniel Adams, in his
"Annalses of Portsmouth" that on April 20, 1761, the Mr. John
Stavers started to race a stage from that city to Boston. The carriage was
a curricle of the two-horse, wide enough to arrange three passengers. The
rate was thirteen shillings and six genuine pennies for head. The curricle
