Perhaps the most satisfactory show of arts of mediaeval and arts
what you/he/she can be seen in a city it is to Hildesheim: the special wealth
of rests of the tenth century you/he/she is owing to the life and example
of a first bishop--Bernward--who dominated the Sees from 993 to 1022.
Before he was made bishop, Bernward was guardian to the young Emperor
Eight IIIs. He was a student of art all of his/her life and a practical
artisan, greatly working in metals and training on a Guild of
followers in the Authoritative School. He was extremely versatile: one
of the great geniuses of history. In durations of war he was Commander
in Head of Hildesheim; he was a traveller, after having made pilgrimages
to Rome and Paris and the grave of Martin of Street to Turns. This breadth
culture was unusual in those days; it is rather evident from his
the active life of completion in creative art that good Episcopalian
Bernward would not be numbered among those of what the end they were waited
the world to happen of year 1000 A. D. Of his/her jobs to be seen
in Hildesheim, they are splendid examples. The jeweler's School
under his/her direction it was famous.
He was created bishop in 992; Taugmar pays him/it a tribute, while saying:
"He was an excellent penman, a good painter and as a family
manager was unequalled." "Besides, him excelled in the mechanic
anybody less that in the letters." In fact, a visit to Hildesheim
to-day tries that to this man that lived ten centuries ago it is due
the fact that Hildesheim is the most artistic city in Germany from
the antiquarian point of view. This bishop influenced every branch
of art, and with so vital an influence that his still Sees city it is
full of his/her jobs and the personality. Not only he was a practical
worker in the arts and arts, but he was also a collector, while forming
a true museum for the further instruction of the students that you/they came
in touch with him. He decorated the walls of his/her cathedral; the great one
candelabrum or cigar avana of which it surrounds above of the central corridor the
cathedral, was its his/her own sketch and the job of its followers; and
