between the Russian and French frontiers and Belgians. Since then 1870
Europe was talking war. Children were brought on and cultured
in the belief that in the daytime some war would come. The most greater part of people they considered
it inevitable, even if not every wanted him/it.
During the exciting days of August, 1914, I was calling to the
belligerent embassies and legations in Washington. Neither M.
Jusserand, the ambassador French, neither Mr. Spring-rice of Cecil, the
British ambassador, neither it Counts von Bernstorff, the Kaiser
representative, it was then to Washington. But it was not a lot of weeks
until all the three you/they had hastened to this country from Europe. Almost the
before the belligerents' action you have to send their envoys to Washington.
As I met these men I was in a sense an agent of public opinion that
called every day to bring the opinions of the belligerents to the
readers of American newspapers. One day in the British embassy I was
copies determined of the White Book and of many other documents that Gran
Britain had published to show as she tried to avoid the war. In
conversations later with von of Ambassador Bernstorff, I was given the
German point of view.
The thing that thrilled me to the duration was the desire of these
official to see their opinions the American people. But because
it made these ambassadors they want the places of observation of their governments
does understand here? Because it was out the singled of United States of everybody
other neutrals? If everybody the belligerents wanted to really avoid war,
because it did them they don't start first twenty years to prevent him instead of,,
to prepare for him?
All the powers published their official documents for a chief physician
purpose--to win public opinion. Before it was necessary for each,
country to convince his/her his/her own people that their country was being
attached and that their leaders had done all possible to avoid
