Slowly on increases of Heights of Morningside the Cathedral of St. John the
Divine: being standing on a tall stone under the Northern sky above of the long one
you wash some unperturbed sea, above of the wash of the waves shaken of men.
It has appropriate neighbors. Through the road to the north it appears in distance the
Grey-walled hospital and very-towered of St. Luke--cathedral of our ruins,
of our sufferings and our dust, near the cathedral of our souls.
Through the block to the south it is situated a shed-as building of two-history
with dormitory-windows and a three-sided roof and creased, the studies of the
National academy of Sketch; and under that least youths of fragile skylight
toils on the forms and colors of the evanescent and visible heaven of
the earth in the shade of the cathedral that promises to an invisible a,
eternal.
To the back of the cathedral, through the roadway the stands a low stone
wall. Earth's sinks it likes only on the wall a precipice to a green
fund of valley far under. Out here is an uneven slant of stone and vegetable
and growth of forest that brings the city an ancient presence,
nature--nature, the Fields of Elysian of the school of art, the field of the potter
of the hospital, the field of crop of the church.
