"I suppose that you will go in for the prize, Val. You have a beautiful boat to
you practise in."
"Any amount of practice would give me the prize. I don't excel as a
rower."
"Who is expected to win?"
"Conrad Carter confidently counts on to assure the prize. There is no boy
in Arden that can compete with him, except--"
"Well, except who?"
"Andy Grant."
"I don't know", said Andy, thoughtfully. "I can row well enough--that
it is, I used; but I am out of practice."
"Because it doesn't get back Your practice?"
"I don't have boat."
"Then mine" of use, said Valentine, quickly.

"I cannot go up to after supper."
"Then you start this evening. You know where I hold my boat. I will be to
the boathouse to mean-past six, and you can satisfy there me."
"Every right. You are a good friend Val."
"I try to be, but it am not every friendship."

"I want Conrad it defeated. Now he is unbearable, and if he wins the

Perspective Pond was out a small distance of the village. It was a
beautiful sheet of water and a favorite appeal for parties of picnic.
Conrad Carter, Valentine Brucia and two or three other boys and youth
men had there boats, and a called man Serwin held boats to rent.
But the best boats belonged to Valentine and Conrad. It was rather
troubling to Conrad that some one should have a boat as good person as his really,
but this was anything that he could not help. He comforted him/it, however,
reflecting that he was a best rower that the Valentine.
