[Footnote 114: Godkin was united to the personnel of the _Daily News_ in 1853.
During the War of Crimea he was war special correspondent. He had travelled
extensively in America in the late 'the fifties and it was completely well
informed. From 1862 to 1865 its letters to the _Daily News_ were of
great value in to encourage the British friends of the north. In 1865
Godkin became editor of the _Nation_ in New York.]

"two-third of the authors English the cause of Union got married him, some of
them actively--Teacher Newman, Grinds, Tom Hughes, Mr. Charles Lyell,

Harrison, Leslie Stefano, Allingham, the Rossettis", Vol. ME, P. 406.
Probably this is true of last, although not of initial, affairs and
attitude. But for many writers their published jobs don't give sign to
their opinions on the Civil War--as for example the jobs of Dickens,
Thackeray, William Morris or Ruskin. Sees Duffus, "Opinion English,"
