1859 and a bystander in 1861. In of the respects the job is historically
unworthy of trust from when the inside evidence ago in clear way that the greatest part
of he was written first 1846 in that year that Grattan has retired from his
posts in Boston. In general he bitterly wrote of America, and as his
child succeeded to the consulate in Boston, Grattan probably thought him/it

[Footnote 33:  Charles Mackay, _Life and the Liberty in America:  or, Squirts
of a Turn in the United States and Canada in 1857-8_, a vol., New
York, 1859, pp.  316-17. Mackay was at least of enough reputation as a
poet to be thought worthy to a supper in Boston to that there was
present, Longfellow, Holmes, Agassiz, Lowell, Prescott, Governor Banks,
and others. He preached "hands through the seas" in his/her public lectures,
reading his/her poem "John and Jonathan"--a kind of advance every now and then
copy of the idea of Kipling of the Load of the "White Man." Mackay is concluding
toward, "John" that he/she speaks it was:

     "And I have strength for nobler job
       What an e'er that my hand has done,
     It is kingdoms to dominate and the truths to plant
       Over the rising sun.
     Picks her up the west and me the east;
       We will spread there to the foreign countries,
     With work and spade and healthy laws,
       And the faith in man and God."
