Mackay, drawn by the American press as a British and separate poet","
who made the rapid and usual turn of the principal cities of America in
1857-58, and as quickly penned his/her impressions:
"A lot of people in the United States speak of a resolution of
the union, but few believes in him.... All this is the mere brag
and talked empty. It doesn't intend anything. The union is dear to everybody
American, anything they can say contrarily.... There is
any present danger to the union and the violent expressions
to that end-ardent statesmen of the north and South
sometimes gives hole doesn't have true meaning. The 'West Gran,'
as you/he/she has affectionately called, even now it is in the position to
arbiters between north and South, owe the stretching of dispute
over words, or it owes anti-slavery or some other question
