under the genius of Dante, from a lake confuses of dialects in a
literary language. Dante did for Italy what Chaucer was later soon for doing
for England. On the side of the one influenced by the Renaissance and the birth
of the Italian and new language, on the other from the Jewish revival of
letters in Spain and Provence, the Italian Hebrews combined alone the
Jewish spirit with the spirit of the classical Renaissance. Immanuel was
the incarnation of this complex soul.
This can be seen by the form of the _Machberoth_ of Immanuel, or
"Harvest." His second portion, separately called "Hell and
Eden", you/he/she was imitated by the Christian Dante; as a whole the poem was
projected on the _Tachkemoni_ of Charizi, an Israelite development of the Arab
Couch. The poet is not the hero of his own song, but as the Arab
poets of the couch, conceive a character of what he/she fills the centre the
cloth--a really identical character with the author, still in a sense
anything else other than him. A lot of picturesque quality of effect is produced by this double part
played by the poet that, as is, it satirizes the own his/her doings. In
The _Machberoth_ of Immanuel there is a lot of variety of romantic accident. But
it is in satire that he reaches his/her taller level. Love and wine are the
frequent loads of his/her song, as they is in the Provencal and Italian
poetry of his/her day. Immanuel was anything of a Voltaire in his playful
treatment of sacred things and pietists as Joseph Karo they interdicted the
study of the _Machberoth_. Others also, described his/her songs as sensuous
and his/her satires as blasphemer. But the devotee and the serious pity of
some of Immanuel prayers,--some of them to be found in the
_Machberoth_ I was--test the licentiousness of that Immanuels and
lightness is due, not to miss of reverence, but to the attempt to
you reconcile the ideals of Italian society of the period of the Renaissance
with the ideals of the Judaism.
Immanuel you owe his/her rhymed prose to Charizi, but again him show his
the devotion twos masters writing Israelite sonnets. The sonnet was new
