The Anglo-Indian has a very excellent eye for colour. He will reduce
"an anna in the rupee" with infallible certainty;  he will suspect
smaller coin. He will tell him how he can discover a he/she corrupted
European from his/her knuckles, his/her fingernails, his/her eyebrows, his/her pronunciation
of the vowels and his/her conception of convenience in suit, way, and
behavior.

To the complete-cross Anglo-Indian through which blood has distilled
Haileybury for three generations, and of who cousins to the quarter
degree is Collectors and Indian Managed Colonels, the Eurasian, however
equitable he can be, it is a _bete noir_. Mrs. Ellenborough Higgins is always
putting or sharpening to black blood.

And sometimes the whitey-brown man is deplorable. He is vain, proper
to take offense, astute, indolent, sensuous and, as Reuben, "unstable
how water." He has an easy smile, a clammy hand a way or
directly or respectful, an affected gait, and not always the snowiest
flax. [In very dangerous cases he has a particular sense of smell.]

Toward natives the Eurasian is cold, haughty, and formal;  and this
