[Sidenote: Proscriptions and massacres of Sylla.]
Marius left a child, of the same name with him to that it tried
holds back the power of his/her father; but Sylla, having brought his/her war with
Mithridates to a conclusion, was now on his/her return of Asia, and it was
very evident that a terrible conflict was almost about to achieve. Sylla advanced
triumphantly through the country, while Marius the more youth and his
partisanses assembled their strengths on the city, and prepared for
defense. The people of the city were separated the aristocratic faction,
sticking to the cause of Sylla, while democratic influences sided
with Marius. Political parties rise and fall, in almost all centuries of the
world, in alternate fluctuations as those of the tides. The faction
of Marius had been for of the time in the predominance, and now it was his
turns to fall. Sylla founded, therefore, as he advanced, every thing
favorable to the restoration of his own party to motorize. He destroyed the
manages that went out for opporrlo. Him closed on the young Marius in a
city not in Rome, where he was striven to find refuge and
protection, and then it was advanced and taken possession of the city.
There he caused to be decreed again the horrid scenes of massacre and
murder that had perpetrated first Marius, while going, however so much
over the example that he followed as men usually does in the errand
of crime. He distributed lists of the names of men that he desired to have
destroyed, and these unhappy victims of his/her revenge would be outcast
out of ribbons of unwise soldiers, in their residences or in the places
of appeal public in the city, and it sent wherever from their sword
you/he/she could be found. The scenes in which you/they created these actions an enormous and
populous city can be conceived as soon as than from those that never have
testified to the horrors produced by the massacres of civil war. Sylla
