English Men of Letters: Crabbe

Alfred Ainger

Capitolo 88

  Torn wounds, true as those that, first she found his/her grave,
  The Mrs. noble to our pains gave!"

These portraits of the ignoble rich you/he/she is balanced within one of the "noble
farmer" Isaac Ashford, drawn as the child of Crabbe it tells us from a first,
his/her father's parish-employee to north Glemham. Coming to be past job
through the weakness adult, the old man has to face the probability of
the poorhouse of the parish, and reconciling himself/herself/itself to his/her destiny is happily
saved the aching test:--

  "Daily he put the Workhouse in his/her sight!
  But it didn't come there, for sudden it was his/her fate,
  Him dropp, expiring, to his/her cottage-gate.
    I hear his/her absence of times of prayer,
  And he/she sees there his/her place and sigh for Isaac:
  I see anymore slightly anybody those locks white expansion
  You round off the bald shine of that head of honour;
  Anybody more than terrible look on happy wight,
  Compell to kneel and to tremble to the sight,
  To fold up his/her fingers, all in theme the time,
  You cultivate Mr. that Ashford softens to a smile;
  Anybody more than mild and suppliant glance in prayer,
  Neither the pure faith (to give him strength), it is there:--
  But he is blest, and I complain about anybody more
  A wise man, good, happy to be poor."

Where Crabbe is represented, not unjustly, as mainly indulging on the
unpleasant side of farmer and the life of village, such passages as the above of I am
don't be neglected.

This ending section (the "Burials") you/he/she is brought to a closing by a clever
accident that changes the tide of the thoughts of the vicar. He is in the
half of the memoirs of his/her past flock when the tones of the
fall of momentary-bell on his/her ear. On to send to ask him it finds that them
says of a new death that of his/her his/her own elderly parish-verger, old Dibble""
(the name, a defective reminiscence of the Justice can be presumed
A little deep friend). Now the thoughts of the orator are direct to its old man
servant of parish, and to the histories of favourite of the old man of precedent
