PREFACE.

The life of Airy essentially it was that of a hard-working, man of business,
and it only differed from that of other hard-working people in the
quality and variety of his/her job. It was not an exciting life but it
it was full of interest, and its job brought him/it in near relationships
with many scientific men, and with many men stop in the State. His
the true life of business started after he became an Astronomer Royal, and
since then direct, during the 46 years in which he has remained
office, he was wound above so entirely in the duties of his/her place that
the history of the observatory is the history of his/her life. To write
its life of business there is material abundant, for him it preserved his
correspondence, and the principal sources of information are as it follows:

    (1) his/her Autobiography.
    (2) his/her Annual Reports to the Board of Visitors.
    (3) its printed Papers entitled "Papers from G.B. Airy."
    (4) his/her miscellaneous private correspondence.
    (5) his/her letters to his/her wife.
    (6) his/her correspondence of business.

(1) his/her Autobiography, after the duration that he became an Astronomer Royal,
it is, as you/he/she would be waited, mainly a record of the scientific job
continued to the observatory in Greenwich:  but from anybody means exclusively
then. Around the duration when he taken position of the observatory there was a
immense development of astronomic enterprise:  observatories were
jumping above in all the directions, and for the astronomer Royal was waited
to put to the current one on all the British and Colonial Observatories. It was
